by Rachel Sirota

The luxury brand name of an Austrian precision-cut lead crystal "Swarovski" has become world famous. David Rockwell must have bought his Swarovski Crystals wholesale when he designed the set for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Because the set glimmered with its awe-inspiring, sixty foot tall, weighing in at three ton, Swarovski crystal curtain. More than 100 000 crystals were used in this design; and these were especially air-freighted in from Austria.

David is an Architect from New York who is known for his shaggy hair and lengthy resume. The awe inspiring curtain at the show this year redefined the Oscar experience and took it back to the days of magnificence, but could only have been done in partnership with Swarovski.

Who would have thought that one Daniel Swarovski, born in 1862 to a glass cutter, in the Czech Republic, (died 1956) would have been one of the partners responsible for this incredible display? He was the gentleman who patented a revolutionary electric glass cutting machine which was able to facilitate the manufacture of lead crystal glass now used to make jewelry, fashion, home d?cor, couture and chandeliers. However David Rockwell has partnered with this company on many occasions.

David Rockwell is not the only big name to have partnered with this Austrian company, they have been used widely by many different designers, for many different purposes. We are looking at big names like Louis Vuitton, Holly Yashi and Gucci and Pet who created the most bling dog collars you have ever laid your eyes upon. Even Sir Elton John has been taken in by the Swarovski allure.

Sir Elton John is known for his love of bling, much like Liberace loved his glitz. So iPod designed and iPod Nano. Decorated it with designs of Elton John stage costumes and decorated it with 250 Swarovski crystals. Only 100 of these were made in nine different colors, so they are a very limited edition. Elton John endorsed the product because iPod said they would donate 12. 5% of the proceeds of the sale of these to the Elton John Aids Foundation.

His signature adorns the back of the iPod, it is engraved, and he allowed them to use his name in response to the fact that his charitable foundation would receive rather a large donation from their sale. Limited edition iPods are in great demand; Swarovski crystal adorned iPods are in even greater demand.

Although Swarovski crystals are famous for adorning the ears of many stars and normal people alike, you are also able to find earphones and hanging earpieces for your iPod decorated with these gem-like pieces of glass. Talk about taking accessories to the limit?

During the mid 20th century, jewelry made from Swarovski Crystal became very popular. It did not take long for celebrities to take to these accessories, and this helped to make them part of the trend in popular culture. Now, we find them everywhere, even adorning the curtains of the stage at the Oscars!

Swarovski adorned jewelry is not only worn off stage and the recently made "Young Victoria" by Jean-Marc Vall?e, sees Emily Blunt (Portraying Victoria) wearing meticulously researched pieces of jewelry from the Crown Jewels collection.
