Charms Of Destiny Symbols Of The Zodiac

by Shiran Cohen

Knowing a bit about astrology and what most people know of as the symbols of the zodiac is a great way to start collecting charms. These stylized or very traditional types of charms are very important additions to any bracelet and are often seen as bringers of good luck to the person fortunate enough to be wearing the charms.

The zodiac, literally translated, means the circle of life or the area in space around the earth through which the sun traces its path each year. Although in modern terms zodiac signs, as represented on charms, are designated by specific dates on the calendar as time, in the sky they actual represent the space. This space forms sections, which then are called by their zodiac name.

Always elliptical, the path of the zodiac never changes. The elliptical shape is divided into 12 segments that are equal in size and correspond to constellations within that space boundary. The symbols that are used now on charms and jewelry are the same as the symbols the first western astrologers selected thousands of years ago. Interesting enough almost all of the symbols represent some type of living form, although not all are actual living beings.

Charms that depict the animals of the zodiac include the bull, ram, crab, lion, scorpion, goat and fish. In addition there are the human or mythical zodiac signs of the twins, scales, water carrier, centaur and virgin that are also designed in very stylized forms.

Within each symbol of the zodiac there are certain traits or behaviors attributed to a person born when the sun is in that section of the sky. Other planets that may be orbiting through that area also can influence the person born at that time. There are charms that also symbolize different planets that can be combined with a zodiac or astrological charm.

In addition to identifying people born within a specific period of time, the zodiac charms are great just as decorative pieces on a bracelet. After all not everyone that wears these charms is necessarily up on all the astrological implications of the symbol. Often the zodiac symbols are combined with birthstones to add to the beauty and uniqueness of the charms.

For a really unique collection of charms and a new twist on a family charm bracelet try using the signs of the zodiac to represent the family members. The variety of styles and types of charms means you can mix and match disk charms with symbols for a one of a kind bracelet.

Knowing a bit about the charms and their meanings is a fun way to be able to talk to others about your bracelet. With all the different possible combinations it is sure to catch people's attention and have them asking questions.
